Applications of our techniques

High quality and trustworthy research, that is TerraCarta’s main goal. Our dynamic company has the know-how and experience to operate in a variety of fields. Because of this, there is no field where TerraCarta does not have an innovative method to map the underground situation.

Underground utilities

The newest techniques are used to locate utilities. We use EML, GPR and trench digging to locate utilities in a precise manner. The data is then surveyed and digitally processed in order to correct and revise the existing maps of the underground situation. When the situation of the utilities is unknown, TerraCarta will also locate and map them.

HDD pipes

Utilities that are put through a HDD (Horizontal Directional Drilling) pipe are often damaged during excavation, building and dredging activities. In order to prevent extra costs and potential delays, TerraCarta can map HDD pipes. Through the Dutch national database for underground utilities we look for the utilities in question, and then we use our detection methods, like EML and GPR, to find the exact location of the start of the drilling. After that, we put together a plan in order to fully map the pipe. If water is involved, we often use a raft or boat.

Land Surveying

When utilities have to be located, they have to be digitally surveyed. TerraCarta has the necessary land surveying equipment including GPS, dGPS, 06-GPS and Total Stations, in order to survey the exact positions. Other than using our land surveying equipment for locating utilities, we also do regular land surveying, for example:

  • Topographic surveying;
  • Surveying cross-sections (both wet and dry);
  • Height surveys;
  • Employing points (construction);
  • Line surveys.
  • And more

Obstacle research

Our underground mapping is not limited to utilities, but can also incorporate other obstacles found underground. Examples could be foundation remains, clusters of rubble, underground tanks, barrels or pieces of pole. By discovering these obstacles in an early stage of a project, a lot of time and money can be saved during the execution.

Investigating layer thickness

Among civil-engineering related sectors, such as railroad and road construction, layer thickness is a defining aspect that can determine whether a project is possible to achieve. TerraCarta investigates layer thickness by using advanced GPR techniques. Based on the results, the amount of soil, tarmac or roadbed can be mapped. TerraCarta has been using this method since 1995, and by examining the research location before execution we can determine if the GPR method will be sufficient or if another method is needed to map the layers and layer thickness.
